Introduction to Mentoring

“Every great man is always being helped by everybody;

for his gift is to get good,

out of all things and all persons”.

John Ruskin.

Mentoring is an interactive process that uses Psychology, Performance Coaching and other disciplines, to ensure that all levels of staffing can overcome personal and organizational barriers that inhibit their pursuit of growth and profits.

It is an interesting fact that whether you involve yourself in business or sport, you possess untapped valuable skills and resources that could dramatically improve your performance.

In the sports arena, we readily accept the importance and value of coaches. Any golfer knows that his competitor might have the necessary physical skills to win, but the game will probably be won or lost in the mind.

We aren’t fazed to hear about Tiger Wood’s coach earning a million dollars, and we know that Mark Spitz’s coach (winner of 7 gold medals at the Munich Olympics) couldn’t even swim.

But if you heard that the Chairman of a local Engineering Company was employing a personal coach – How would you respond? Some people, (in the UK anyhow), respond as if employing a coach is something to be embarrassed by. In reality the complete opposite is true.

To employ every method to enhance your performance and well-being, is the behaviour of someone who is open minded, spirited and intelligent.

The use of repression as a coping approach nearly always leads to other destructive strategies such as alcohol or drug abuse, or the displacing of frustrations and limitations on to others.

Employing a mentor is often likened to having a personal fitness trainer, but relates to your psychological development, skills development and personal growth matters.

Why use a Mentor?

“I not only use all the brains I have, but all I can borrow.”

Woodrow Wilson

Individuals that have access to support from a mentor or coach, to help build skills and explore personal growth issues, tend to reach higher positions, due to their accelerated personal development path. Consequently they are more confident and successful.

Mentoring helps people to develop faster thereby becoming more efficient, more productive, happier and successful. After all, personal issues are inevitably intertwined within work;

bullet

Where am I going?

bullet

What do I want?

bullet

What does success mean to me?

bullet

Are my values changing?

bullet

Are these the most efficient behaviours to reach my goal?

These kinds of questions are nothing to be self-conscious about – All successful people ask them.

“The brighter you are the more you have to learn.”

Don Herold

A mentor who is trained and experienced in the science of human behaviour can assist in an extremely profound and dynamic way, by offering different and sometimes new ranges of knowledge, skills, experience and insights that the ‘mentee’ can hugely benefit from.

Mentors are not just for your top executives. Within all corporate environments, there are both positive and negative behaviour patterns and self-limiting beliefs from within every strata of staffing levels.

The negative patterns can exert a disproportionate level of damage to your organization, often on an unconscious level. They can range from merely inappropriate to highly destructive.

They can frustrate the leading management and if left unchecked can lead to poor growth, loss of market share, negative stress, high turnover of staff and poor morale.

“All Companies have staff whose minds are so well equipped with the means of refutation and dogma that no new idea has the temerity to seek admittance. Their real contribution to your Company’s success is accordingly very small.”

 Based on P.Medawar’s Scientific method.

Mentors are skilled at identifying destructive patterns, bringing them into awareness and replacing them by developing new and positive behaviours.

Past Case Studies

Complete confidentiality is assured and never taken for granted. For this reason it has been necessary to change most of the details of these cases below (apart from case study 3).

Case study 1.

Two share traders (names changed) – both past clients from the same company – both highly ‘successful’.

John kept ‘losing his control’ in specific situations – a deeper, more powerful part of him over-ruled his conscious mind at critical moments during a trade. This was holding him back becoming in his words, ‘a big player’. His subconscious mind was not in tune with his conscious mind. In other words, he knew what he should do consciously, but subconsciously his past learnings made him act and behave differently. In that particular case, hypnosis proved highly effective.

Mike was on the verge of spectacularly losing his confidence. It took just 8 sessions to change what was fast becoming a negative self-fulfilling prophecy, back to a forward positive path.

Case study 2 .

Under the auspices and instigation of the HR director of a Food Flavouring Company, all senior executives experienced mentoring on a one to one basis. After 3 months, one morning per month was devoted to group work with regard to specific issues within the company.

The executives not only benefited by having a personal programme devoted to their own individual needs, but when group work commenced, the levels of creative thinking, attitudes and perceptions provided dynamic changes within a whole range of company strategies and practices.

Case study 3 .

I offer a very personal experience; My father was by most measurable criteria, a respected and highly successful businessman. He had Chairmen of some of the U.K.'s biggest companies knocking on his door. There were many offers to buy his company and his services. My father had the respect of everyone who knew him. He died at 45 years old with a wife and 2 sons. He died an Alcoholic.

He was labeled as highly successful. Although a genuine gentle man, he was actually quite ‘unsuccessful’ in other aspects of his life. My point is, that without any doubt, he was capable of changing and improving. He certainly had the necessary resources. He never found or used them.

Of course each and every one of us is unique and therefore different, but learning new and powerful techniques through one-on-one consulting, exploring personal issues, strengthening areas of weakness and enhancing strengths, are just a few of the ways mentoring can help enhance personal and professional development.

What other outcomes can I expect?

bullet

You will feel calmer, more in control and more confident.

bullet

You will learn techniques and skills to carry with you and use in the future in every area of your life.

bullet

You will see things in their true perspective.

bullet

You will find strengths that you didn’t know you had.

bullet

You will be able to access resources, capabilities and abilities when you need them.

bullet

You will become more creative and feel increasingly optimistic.

bullet

You will see the bigger picture – your horizons will widen.
