Introduction to Mentoring
“Every great man is always being helped by everybody; for his gift is to get good, out of all things and all persons”.
John Ruskin. Mentoring
is an interactive process that uses Psychology, Performance Coaching and other
disciplines, to ensure that all levels of staffing can overcome personal and
organizational barriers that inhibit their pursuit of growth and profits. It
is an interesting fact that whether you involve yourself in business or sport,
you possess untapped valuable skills and resources that could dramatically
improve your performance. In
the sports arena, we readily accept the importance and value of coaches. Any
golfer knows that his competitor might have the necessary physical skills to
win, but the game will probably be won or lost in the mind. We
aren’t fazed to hear about Tiger Wood’s coach earning a million dollars, and
we know that Mark Spitz’s coach (winner of 7 gold medals at the Munich
Olympics) couldn’t even swim. But
if you heard that the Chairman of a local Engineering Company was employing a
personal coach – How would you respond? Some people, (in the UK anyhow),
respond as if employing a coach is something to be embarrassed by. In reality
the complete opposite is true. To employ every method to enhance your performance and well-being, is the behaviour of someone who is open minded, spirited and intelligent. The use of repression as a
coping approach nearly always leads to other destructive strategies such as alcohol or drug
abuse, or the displacing of frustrations and limitations on to others.
Employing
a mentor is often likened to having a personal fitness trainer, but relates to
your psychological development, skills development and personal growth
matters.
Why use a Mentor?“I
not only use all the brains I have, but all I can borrow.”
Woodrow
Wilson Individuals
that have access to support from a mentor or coach, to help build skills and
explore personal growth issues, tend to reach higher positions, due to their
accelerated personal development path.
Mentoring helps people to develop faster thereby becoming more
efficient, more productive, happier and successful. After all, personal issues
are inevitably intertwined within work
These kinds of questions are nothing to be self-conscious about – All successful people ask them. “The
brighter you are the more you have to learn.”
Don
Herold A
mentor who is trained and experienced in the science of human behaviour can
assist in an extremely profound and dynamic way, by offering different and
sometimes new ranges of knowledge, skills, experience and insights that the
‘mentee’ can hugely benefit from. Mentors
are not just for your top executives. Within all corporate environments, there
are both positive and negative behaviour patterns and self-limiting beliefs from
within every strata of staffing levels. The
negative patterns can exert a disproportionate level of damage to your
organization, often on an unconscious level. They can range from merely
inappropriate to highly destructive. They
can frustrate the leading management and if left unchecked can lead to poor
growth, loss of market share, negative stress, high turnover of staff and poor
morale.
“All Companies
have staff whose minds are so well equipped with the means of refutation and
dogma that no new idea has the temerity to seek admittance. Their real
contribution to your Company’s success is accordingly very small.” Based on P.Medawar’s Scientific method. Mentors
are skilled at identifying destructive patterns, bringing them into awareness
and replacing them by developing new and positive behaviours.

Case Studies
Complete confidentiality is assured and never taken for granted. For this reason it has been necessary to change most of the details of these cases below (apart from case study 3). Case
study 1.
Two
share traders (names changed) – both past clients from the same company –
both highly ‘successful’. John
kept ‘losing his control’ in specific situations – a deeper, more
powerful part of him over-ruled his conscious mind at critical moments during
a trade. This was holding him back becoming in his words, ‘a big player’.
His subconscious mind was not in tune with his conscious mind. In other words,
he knew what he should do consciously, but subconsciously his past learnings
made him act and behave differently. In that particular case, hypnosis proved
highly effective. Mike was on the verge of spectacularly losing his confidence. It took just 8 sessions to change what was fast becoming a negative self-fulfilling prophecy, back to a forward positive path. Case study 2
